If your personality cannot blend into the place you live in, you will not have won the decisive battle related to the man-environment fit. You don’t buy places hourly. You buy a home and make it your home for a good deal of time. So, if there is a good chance you will stay put at a place, why not give your best shot in making it a dream place?
The worst decorating mistakes are often very basic in nature
It is quite disappointing to see people making basic mistakes while decorating their homes. If I talk about them, not many of us will agree we have it in us to make these fundamental errors. But fact is we do…yes we do it all the time.
Paint first or fabric first?
All right, what should we choose first; paint or tapestry? It is a very basic question and yet hundreds of households get their room painted first and buy tapestry accordingly. What you think is a good choice is perhaps the best alternative possible, but if you want to do it perfectly, buy your fabrics first and then test multiple shades of paint till the time you are absolutely satisfied. 99 out of 100 times you will find that your paint and tapestry are in complete sync.
One-stop shopping
I also wonder whether we can put it down to sheer laziness that we do most of our home decor accessory shopping from one place. It is a sin, nothing short of it! LG is a great company but would you expect it to sell the best Kindles, too. Will you trust Vacuum Cleaners from General Motors as much as you trust their cars?
The line of reasoning is simple: no matter how brilliant a one-stop shop looks, it can’t sell the perfect fabrics, paints, furniture, and appliances. It will be really good with one thing and average with another. So move around, give yourself a few rides and even if it pains your muscles and eats away your time, shop for things only where you know you will find them best.
Furniture placement
I also think furniture placement is something we err with quite a lot. Look at it this way; it is not easy to change floor plans. You can hardly do it without investing a fortune. What you can do instead is change the alignment of your furniture.
Among the many home decorating mistakes I have seen over the years, illogical placement of furniture comes to the mind first. In a few cases, it cramps room space and in other cases; it makes for poor aesthetics and besides, it is not symmetric to the eye at all.
Think about these few points and feel free to add a few from your side, too.
