The appetite of time is that it does not pass every fad. Fashions change over time. Only some very necessary or reliable ones meet the requirements of time and continue to be in vogue (well, forever). At the moment, it seems that ‘green homes’ is one such idea.
Green home design ideas
Our gross negligence has put the environment under threat, and global warming and potential energy crisis are not making the job any easier for us. Naturally, then, the least we can contribute is to build environment-conscious homes or what others call “green homes”. The question that automatically comes to the mind is how are green homes built. Let us try and answer this question over the ambit of this article.
Windows and doors
The job begins with using only the environment-friendly doors. It is a mistake to use front doors with windows because the advantage they bring by letting in sunlight is more than compensated by the heat they allow to escape. On top of this, such windows do not hold true to the needs of insulation in general. A wooded door constructed from recyclable materials will give your ‘green’ cause more impetus.
Roofing
An Energy Star-rated roof made from aluminium can resist a lot of heat and is fairly helpful to the environment, too. I advise this to many of my clients.
Fireplace
When we burn wood, we give way to deforestation which is tragic. You can become a crusader for wood at your home by using natural gas fireplaces.
Solar panel
Nothing beats solar panels! Yes, they can cost you at the time of installation, but this expense can more than offset your traditional electricity by the kind of energy they can save and the length of time for which they are at your service.
Living walls
I am particularly fond of green walls. These vertical hangings can be placed in your living room. Not only do they lower the temperature of the home and bring down any possible Sick Building Syndrome; they also improve the indoor air quality by a distance. Talking on the subject, it is crucial to get your home painted in a way that avoids introduction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
You will be ‘green’ as long you can follow some of these home design ideas.
