Australians, as deduced by a Queensland survey, have changed little over the years when it comes to factors they regard foremost for their house designs. They are quite concrete about certain (largely artificial) home factors while showing leniency towards those like natural adornments, reports Venessa Paech on the website realestate.com.au. There is a hint that these considerations may only bleakly change, when we survey people of other states.
The foremost home factor
In her characteristically elaborate manner, Miss Paech suggests that Australians reserve the best spot for designs and aspects that offer real value for money. This directly translates into an inference that they give appreciable credit to practical purposes (extra bedrooms, ventilation and so on). Clearly, Australians keep aesthetics in the back-seat when they consider their choice of houses.
Giving a close fight
The other factor which Australians are almost equally vocal about is the quality of infrastructure and longevity. They focus over building materials, insulation; eventual visual appeal and the ultimate design of their houses. They move to other considerations only when these two aspects are energetically sealed.
Importance of other factors
The third and fourth home factors that Australians consider are ‘standard fixtures’ and ‘liveability of the place’ respectively. HVAC, electrical fittings, plumbing, exhaust fans should all hold a perfect grip and the indoor air quality should be fresh and breezy. The surrounding air should not be polluted and the house should not reek of stench or foul smell from an external drain.
Emphasis on relaxation
A nice outdoor living area completes the Australian frame of top five house factors. There should be enough space for outdoor parties, relaxation and child play. The outdoor area should hold enough spice to entertain people for a few hours. Australians also give brownie points to houses that have a swanky pool in the outdoor area or same such home improvement factors.
Australians (at least those from Queensland) give an impression that they can afford a little leeway when regarding garden maintenance or its size. They don’t seem to mind if their houses don’t meet environmental standards. This surely raises a few question marks.

In my opinion, while the Australian taste in houses appears conventional and may find takers in other developing countries, they are missing out on certain essential factors. Energy-efficiency, climate control and need for a healthy bathroom are all evocative factors that will hold enormous weight in future.
Practicality over aesthetics
Australians seem to tilt more towards practicality than aesthetics but large houses may not be inviting enough if they leave out edgy corridors, fire pits and recreation rooms. In fact, ignoring environmental factor may harm them in the long run, especially in drier places.
Innovations in house designs
House designs are continuously being reinvented with contour crafting and 3D designing coming into the picture. There are a few coteries that plan to create clusters of wooden houses in the midst as well. Thus, the dynamics need to undergo a few changes.
