DIY home renovation is not a bad idea but it comes with its own package of problems. One of the more serious ones is asbestos danger. Instead of propagating this information, Reality TV shows like The Block and The Renovators do very little to address the issue.
An article on News.com.au clearly suggests how lack of footer display on TV screens is hindering essential information from the audience.
Prolonged proximity to asbestos can be hazardous
Senator Lisa Singh talks about the need for such programs to grow a “corporate conscience” and not rake profit at the cost of public health. It is well understood that asbestos is the prime culprit when it comes to Mesothelioma. Continued proximity to asbestos causes this kind of cancer. Asbestos is likely to be present in eavestrough, fluid pipes, drains and fibro sheeting. A DIY home renovator moves in close attendance to such areas for many a months on the trot; this makes him/her vulnerable to Mesothelioma and other dangers related to asbestos.
ADF feels strongly about the warnings
Asbestos Diseases Foundation (ADF) believes that such Reality shows need to reset their moral compass. If nothing else, they must put clear warnings on the screens and declare that only professionals should be used for home renovation.
A silver lining in this regard- Nine Network has talked about imparting information on asbestos danger in their Reality series The Block next season. You can read the whole article here.
Showing asbestos warning is an imperative
I think that the article strikes a very significant social chord. The Block is an Australian reality TV show that has gained massive TRP ratings. It shows 4 to 5 couples renovating homes and selling them successfully at auctions. Such serials have inspired people to dream of DIY home renovations.
It is an imperative that the series’ should not only show the brightness surrounding home renovation or home staging. They should also show the imminent dangers related to asbestos. After all, how much effort does it take to write a line about asbestos danger?
The asbestos danger is very real. It is wise not to undertake any DIY exercise on one’s own. You can put your trust in professionals. It will save you money and it will also keep health hazards at bay.
Are you ensuring your personal and other people’s safety, including from asbestos hazards during your renovation projects?
