14 September, 2016 by Martin Kolarik

green home design elements

More Australians are looking to minimise both environmental impact and financial outlay by outfitting their houses with sustainable, green home design elements.

Green architecture, or green home design, is an approach to building that minimises harmful effects on human health and the environment. It is a way to safeguard air, water, and earth by choosing eco-friendly building materials and construction practices.

Nowadays, it’s not just about adding solar panels on your roof and calling your home sustainable.

Here are three other ways you can add green home design elements to your home:

Fundamentals of Modern Home Design

13 October, 2015 by Martin Kolarik

modern home design

Times change and with them social customs and living ideologies take a turn. No century, however great, can retain all its values and fundamentals from its first year to its last. And this, in fact, is the beauty of our existence on this planet. Think of homes that were built a couple of centuries ago. How will they pass in today’s time? I know that those with an affinity for suburban McMansions won’t still hate the idea of 18th century plots spread over acres but most of us will only too well understand that the trend of big homes is a thing of the past.

Big homes are just one among the many trends that have gone back into time’s womb. Won’t it then be interesting to know which are the present trends that govern modern home design and what are their chances of playing a part in our future? I am surely thrilled to take you on this tour. Hope you will reach the other side of this article equally thrilled (and satisfied).

What You Should Know about Green Flooring

10 April, 2015 by Martin Kolarik

Wood flooringYou’re undertaking a major home renovation, and you’re thinking about going for green flooring. It would certainly be a wise choice, because some of the more common flooring options today, vinyl and regular carpets included, post risks to your home and the environment. Not only are they petroleum based, but they—regular carpets in particular—also harbour allergens and toxic chemicals.

Green flooring options minimise this risk. If you decide to go on with it, here are some things you should know about green flooring.

New French Law Requires Green Rooftops For All New Buildings

7 April, 2015 by Martin Kolarik

green roof gardenThe French Parliament has approved a ground breaking law that requires all new commercial buildings in France to cover their rooftops in plants or solar panels, according to an article on Outdoor Design Source.

Initially, environmental groups wanted full green rooftops covering all new buildings, but a compromise was reached, with the new law eventually mandating that businesses either fully or partially cover part of the roof in plant life or install solar panels on the roof.

Among the many benefits of green rooftops include insulating buildings, absorb rainwater, and offer valuable habitat for wildlife.

With this new law, the urban landscape of French cities will be transformed. Other countries may also be inspired to implement similar laws.

Ideas for Green Home Design

16 December, 2014 by Martin Kolarik

green homesThe appetite of time is that it does not pass every fad. Fashions change over time. Only some very necessary or reliable ones meet the requirements of time and continue to be in vogue (well, forever). At the moment, it seems that ‘green homes’ is one such idea.

Sustainable Homes Through WikiHouse

23 October, 2014 by Martin Kolarik

sustainable homesWhen earthquake hit New Zealand in 2011, the country thought of addressing the damages an earthquake can bring about. It was just then that an open source project called WikHouse was doing the rounds. NZ grabbed it!

WikiHouse is a home designing technology that looks at creating small assemblies and putting them up together just like prefabricated houses. The idea picked up and followed suit in other countries. Today, countries as far away as Holland, Brazil, and China are also embracing the technique.

Setting up Your Own Organic Garden

21 October, 2014 by Martin Kolarik

organic gardenThe vegetables we see in the supermarket are quite luring, but this you can put down to the effect of LED lighting. I must let you into this — there is nothing organic about the glow. These are fruits and vegetables which are brought up on synthesised fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals. Long years of eating this very food give us various types of chronic illnesses. And add to this the harm we are causing to the soil and environment.

Innovative, highly professional and sympathetic

We wanted to suit the needs of our young family but Martin advised us on how to future proof our house design and meet our needs as our family grows up. We now have a stunning home and we couldn’t be happier with the architectural design.

Far Exceeded Our Vision

At the completion of the building works, the end result is fantastic and far exceeds the vision we had all those years ago. Martin was able to take our scattered ideas for what we needed in a major extension/ renovation, at all times patiently working with our changing requirements, and deliver an end result that we are extremely pleased with.

Seven years on and still really happy

Seven years on and still really happy I am sitting here typing this testimonial for Martin, 7 years later, and really appreciating this amazing home we live in that is part of the bush environment, as well as providing my family with a very comfortable and modern home.

Mateki and Liam Payne

Exceeded Our Expectations

Martin's ability to understand our core requirements and present answers and new ideas for our project exceeded our expectations. Several design features that Martin presented to us regularly get positive comments from visitors to our home, these comments have come from builders, designers and engineers.

James Douglass J.P.

Invaluable

Martin has exceeded our expectations during a lengthy design and approval process. His attention to detail and flexibility in being able to interpret our ideas into a new functional space has been outstanding. His assistance during the quotation phase of the project was invaluable and resulted in us engaging a first class builder to complete the works.

Teresa and Peter Gray

Very Attentive

Martin listened very attentively to our requirements and very cooperatively finalised the plan, with careful discussion back and forth. We felt he always took on board our thinking, while respectfully putting his own suggestions.

James and Irene Franklin

Lane Cove

Very Happy

Now that we have lived in the finished product we can categorically state that we wouldn't change any part of the design. Indeed, the only parts of the renovation that we would change are those you weren't involved with!

Michael and Quyen

I Cannot Begin To Thank Martin Enough

One of our main concerns was getting the design through council as we were in a conservation area. Again Martin handled it with ease, going through first time with no amendments! Practically unheard of in our area.

Joe and Sonya La Rosa

The Ultimate Professional

On each occasion I have dealt with Martin and his business I have always found him to be the ultimate professional. One of Martin's strong points, which I particularly admire, is his ability to design to a budget and his understanding of building costs. I feel this is an area of design which many designers are particularly weak.

Mark Newman, Director, Newmark Constructions

www.newmark.com.au

Excellent All the Way

Martin Kolarik was the first person to provide a solution that specifically addressed our requirements. His additional suggestions very much enhanced our living and the value of our home. His unwavering commitment continued until the last paperwork was done, long after the final fee was paid.
