The crux question stares at us- Retrofit LEDs or LEDs from the ground up?
Hopefully, we will be prudent enough to choose the latter option, moving forward. An article on the ‘Lighting’ website confidently suggests the same.
The writer talks about his recent experience at a high-end Scandinavian hotel that boasted of state-of-the-art amenities. On the light front, things were rather decent but there was a deluge of halogens and tungstens. This made him question the imminence of LEDs.
LED Retrofits can only be a compromise
We know how LED has well and truly arrived and there is so much talk about it being the real revolution. In fact, there is widespread optimism around OLED today because we have observed and absorbed the merits of LED by now. It is sad that even after knowing this, we are unwilling (for various reasons) to go the whole distance the LED way. We talk about retrofits but then we conveniently forget how it may affect form-factors and subsequently the intensity, brightness and overall performance of LED retrofits.
What may be the reason behind LED retrofits
Is it then, the writer argues, a paucity of budget, lack of thought process or just the unwillingness to make a massive change ground up? Retrofits have done well but are they able substitutes for a peak design LED fitting. Over a retrofit stage, how will we ensure fitting enough LEDs to arrange for similar brightness? We may also unwittingly rob LED of its greatest gift- its longevity.
Retrofits can only be a temporary measure
It is understandable that phasing out the entire pile of halogens or tungsten based incandescent bulbs may take a while but it makes little sense to go for a temporary retrofit makeover and then another replacement (the final one) in a few years with LED ground up. Retrofit lives to fight another day and may be for a different cause but for lightings; we must not make any compromise and go all out on LEDs.
LED from ground up is the way ahead
The article makes a lot of sense to me. If you are looking for lights for your new home, you will not want anything short of LED lights. Even if you are looking for a renovation, we would advise you not to go for retrofit LEDs on your existing electrical fixtures. Such a move may jeopardize the form factor, thereby inhibiting brightness, sharpness and lifespan of the LED light you plan to use at your home.
