Well-decorated rooms always have a pleasing sense of aesthetics about them and I personally vouch for those where the designing approach is minimal in nature. In times such as these when open floor plans are appreciated for all they are worth, designing paradigms have shifted a lot. One aspect that I have seen gaining much ground in the recent past are the feature walls.
Huge spectrum of colours to benefit from
I never quite understood why we keep being inclined to the neutral and the earth tones for our wall paints. In fact, we give ourselves a pat on the back for looking beyond the traditional white.
However, why do we choose to forget the great range of the colour spectrum; the really bright hues which can make a real difference to our living experience?
Feature walls come in many varieties
Feature walls can be just the kind of succour you need if you are tired of those beiges and earth tones on your walls by now. You can let them remain where they are and give the most dominant wall of your room an accented look.
You can even look beyond the paints and create storage feature walls or sticker-based walls for your rooms. The designs and shades may vary in accordance to the room you want to give a feature wall to.
Generates a focal point for your room
I have seen many clients of mine basking with enthusiasm on the completion of a feature wall. They vouch invariably for the sense of space such walls create, in addition to generating a perfect focal point and sense of individuality for the room.
In Sync or in contrast
For painting feature walls, you can progress along two diametrically opposite paths. Either you can create a wall that is in sync with the existing colour patterns and tones of furniture or you could give it a completely contrast shade.
Which wall should you choose for accenting?
Choosing which wall to use as a “feature” may require some thought. Ideally, you should go for those walls which do not have windows on them.
They should be far away from big curtains (they clearly subtract from the aesthetics of a feature wall). If the walls possess a few architectural features, nothing quite like it.
Among my favourite ideas
Instead of putting an accented shade of paint on the wall, you can also experiment with different ideas. I have personal fondness towards creating a big calendar as a feature. You think it is routine stuff? Think again!
Use chalkboard paints in three different shades and combine them with white emulsion. Create 31 square blocks and use a masking tape to crease out the edges. Once done with this part, you can neatly fill the squares up with different shades.
This was just one among the sea of ideas. Rooms have benefited immensely from storage feature walls (with built-in storage) or a wall with a wide picture gallery (you can improvise with a mural too.)
What shade or pattern do you personally prefer for feature walls?
