Even great ideas face resistance when they are first launched on the horizon. The same was the case with green homes. People immediately backed its implications; its environment-friendliness and efficiency but it remained a kind of thing which everyone wanted in the country but not experimented with in his own backyard.
Builders incorporate green designs
Things have changed dramatically since that time in the past. Today, builders not only approve green buildings but implement its principle in the working design. Let me talk about the tight building envelope first.
Tight building envelope
We know Australian builders prefer tight building envelope (as against the loose one) due to the kind of climate we have here. To this effect, they use appropriate materials for the external walls, roof, sub-roof, exterior doors and windows.
That the designers seek load bearing walls at the exterior surface just boots home the appreciation tight envelope (part of Green Building) has.
MBA’s website
If you go through the Master Builders Association (MBA) website, you will find that they have a course which encourages Green Living and trains builders to build green homes.
Green homes: pressing need of the hour
The green home builders are our answer to the kind of external stimuli we are forced to respond to. Global warming, energy crisis and depletion of ozone layer all talk about an atmospheric imbalance that can be best addressed by green living.
Now the crux question is- are green building designs tough on the pocket? Plainly put: NO
Cost-effective idea
Green homes are aesthetically enticing, structurally strong and are built with concern towards the climate. All this is made possible by the right selection of raw materials and none of the materials cost a dime more than the material used in traditional homes.
Many a times, the material and the concept used is old enough in itself. For instance, what we call reverse brick engineering today is nothing but placing bricks against the internal walls of the roof, a concept used even a decade ago.
Only energy-savings does not make a home green
One of the mindset crimes that we commit is equating green building designs with energy-saving homes. For the latter, you can get hordes of energy-rated appliances, heating pumps and LED lighting. The former requires a much more holistic approach.
Apart from being one up with the energy ratings, green homes use products that are non-toxic and responsible towards the environment. Climate-appropriate building design is another feature of green homes.
If you can lay your hands on a cost-effective home which solves the energy puzzle for you even while being completely conscious towards the environment, why would you not go for it?
If you have a green building design in mind for your home, you can get in touch with me to talk more about the idea.
